What was leaked

BBC News reports that a database named Icepick was published on Wednesday containing names, work addresses and phone numbers of more than 41,000 US Department of Homeland Security personnel. The records include about 21,000 Customs and Border Protection staff and nearly 6,600 Immigration and Customs Enforcement staff, along with employees of Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Protective Service and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

The data also includes dozens of previously unknown operation names, the agents who led and worked on them, and some technology they used, including tools provided by Cellbrite and Palantir. The group Department of Peace and cybersecurity researcher maia crimew put the information online, and it was shared through a website hosted by Distributed Denial of Secrets.

Responses and context

A DHS representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Department of Peace said it accessed the profiles through the single sign-on service Okta. An Okta spokeswoman said the company is aware of the claims but has no evidence its data or systems were compromised.

The leak is the third recent targeting of a government agency, BBC News reports, following a hack of the FBI last month and a suspected hacking attempt that took the Federal Election Commission offline in recent days. It also comes amid public backlash over US immigration enforcement, which BBC News reports has included ICE agents shooting more than two dozen people and killing at least nine this year.

How many DHS personnel had their information leaked, and which agencies are most affected?

More than 41,000 DHS personnel were affected. About 21,000 work for Customs and Border Protection and nearly 6,600 for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the leaked data reported by BBC News.
